1949 Geneva Convention IDP Japan Guide

If your country uses an International Driving Permit route, the key requirement is a valid 1949 Geneva Convention IDP paired with your original passport — both in physical form.

This guide covers how to get the correct permit, what documents to carry, country-specific issuer details, and how to avoid the mistakes that cause rejected check-in.

No valid physical IDP + passport = tour cannot depart

Who Should Use This Route

Use the 1949 IDP Route If

  • Your country issues 1949 Geneva Convention IDPs

  • You can obtain the permit from an official issuer (AAA, CAA, Post Office, etc.)

  • You can bring both passport and IDP in original physical form

Use a Different Route If

  • Your country is translation-eligible through JAF

  • You are U.S. military personnel using SOFA documentation

  • You hold a valid Japanese domestic driver's license

Step-by-Step 1949 IDP Process

Start this process early — ideally 4 to 8 weeks before your trip — so you have time to fix any issues.

1 Step

Confirm your eligibility first

Check whether your license-issuing country is part of the 1949 Geneva Convention. If it is not, you may still be eligible under Japan’s translation-based system for specific countries.

Check eligibility guidance (JAF)
2 Step

Apply for your 1949 IDP in your home country

Apply through your country’s authorized office (for example AAA in the U.S., CAA in Canada, and PayPoint in the U.K.). Please verify the correct issuer for your country before applying.

3 Step

Receive your IDP and book your tour

Once you receive your valid IDP, you can safely book your tour experience. You can also send us a copy in advance and we can help verify your documents before your visit.

4 Step

Bring your IDP and passport to Japan

Bring both original hardcopy documents. Digital copies and printouts are not accepted. Failure to provide valid documents may result in cancellation of your tour.

5 Step

Check in at Kira Kira Tokyo Tours

Upon arrival, complete check-in with your IDP and passport. We provide complimentary welcome drinks, lockers, costumes, and more. Your safety briefing begins 20 minutes before tour departure.

Most Common Rejection Reasons

Wrong Treaty Type

Bringing a 1968 Vienna Convention permit. Similar appearance does not mean legal equivalence for your route.

Digital or Unofficial Documents

PDF permits, screenshots, and documents from non-authorized online sellers fail authenticity checks.

Missing Passport

A valid permit must be paired with your original passport — a photo or copy is not sufficient.

Late Preparation

Applying too close to your travel date leaves no time to replace incorrect permits or fix missing details.

Country-Specific Issuer Notes

Always apply through official channels. If a website promises instant digital approval, it is a scam.

United States

Apply through AAA or AATA only. Unofficial online agencies issue invalid documents.

United Kingdom

Apply at a Post Office branch. Confirm the 1949 Geneva Convention format on the booklet before leaving.

Canada

Use CAA or your provincial authorized association. Confirm validity dates cover your entire trip.

Australia & New Zealand

Use recognized national motoring organizations. Request the physical booklet at least 2 weeks before departure.
