If your country uses an International Driving Permit route, the key requirement is a valid 1949 Geneva Convention IDP paired with your original passport — both in physical form.

Your country issues 1949 Geneva Convention IDPs

Your country is translation-eligible through JAF
You are U.S. military personnel using SOFA documentation
You hold a valid Japanese domestic driver's license
Start this process early — ideally 4 to 8 weeks before your trip — so you have time to fix any issues.
Check whether your license-issuing country is part of the 1949 Geneva Convention. If it is not, you may still be eligible under Japan’s translation-based system for specific countries.
Check eligibility guidance (JAF)Apply through your country’s authorized office (for example AAA in the U.S., CAA in Canada, and PayPoint in the U.K.). Please verify the correct issuer for your country before applying.
Once you receive your valid IDP, you can safely book your tour experience. You can also send us a copy in advance and we can help verify your documents before your visit.
Bring both original hardcopy documents. Digital copies and printouts are not accepted. Failure to provide valid documents may result in cancellation of your tour.
Upon arrival, complete check-in with your IDP and passport. We provide complimentary welcome drinks, lockers, costumes, and more. Your safety briefing begins 20 minutes before tour departure.

PDF permits, screenshots, and documents from non-authorized online sellers fail authenticity checks.
A valid permit must be paired with your original passport — a photo or copy is not sufficient.
Applying too close to your travel date leaves no time to replace incorrect permits or fix missing details.
Always apply through official channels. If a website promises instant digital approval, it is a scam.
Apply through AAA or AATA only. Unofficial online agencies issue invalid documents.
Apply at a Post Office branch. Confirm the 1949 Geneva Convention format on the booklet before leaving.
Use CAA or your provincial authorized association. Confirm validity dates cover your entire trip.
Use recognized national motoring organizations. Request the physical booklet at least 2 weeks before departure.
